Casting with a multiplier reel is an art form, one that I personally have yet to master but next season I have promised myself that I will crack it as I will be using the ultimate boat combo, the Maxximus Solid Carbon 6'6" and Maxximus Multiplier 444 reel. I know the technique but mastering it!!!!!

The multiplier reel is the workhorse of the boat fisherman and long cast beach fisherman. The two types of reels are different, the boat reel is usually larger to cope with heavier lines for targeting larger fish whilst the beach reel is smaller for casting efficiency. The beach reels also have a braking system to aid the angler when the line starts to slow to prevent birds-nesting (this is when the spool overruns and the line forms a birds-nest on top of the reel).

To cast with a multiplier you need to press the spool release button on hold your thumb on the spool to prevent the line peeling off. Bring the rod back to 30o above the horizon then swing the rod forward to cast and release your thumb when the rod is around 45o above the horizon. Keep your thumb lightly on the spool and as soon as the weight hits the water place your thumb firmly on the spool and prevent any more line for leaving the spool. Wind forward and keep the line tight. Simple!

Quick Tips

  •  Keep pressure on the spool with your thumb before casting
  •  Keep your thumb on the spool as the line leaves to prevent to spool spinning faster than the line is pulled
  •  Apply pressure on the spool as soon as the weight hits the water
  •  If over-run keeps happening then tighten the brake system on the reel
  •  Adjust the drag to the rod and likely species then - TRUST IT. Do not be tempted to prevent line being taken by applying pressure to the

spool - this is a sure fire way to be snapped off by the fish.

It takes patience and practice to cast well with a multiplier reel, if this is not you - buy a fixed spool reel!
